SERTOMA CENTRE INC. Successful Dog Training Program Starts Next Session on Sept 2nd 2010
The Animal Welfare League of Chicago Ridge, Black Dog K-9 Performance and Sertoma Centre, Inc. are set for another session of the dog training program for individuals with disabilities. The series begins Thursday, Sept. 2nd and will run four consecutive Thursdays through Sept 23rd. Classes are from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at the Sertoma Center facility located at 4343 West 123rd Street in Alsip, IL. The first session which ran earlier this summer was extremely successful. Word spread about the dog training among those at the Sertoma facility and now even more attendees are interested in participating in the program. We have six people on a wait list for this session. The program brings many benefits for all, including the dogs. Eight of the nine canines trained in the first program had been adopted when classes ended on July 29th.
Participants in the summer class have learned how to train dogs in basic obedience; appropriate touch with animals; canine communication; assist in care; groom; feeding; setting limits with dogs. These are skills that can be used with family pets. As a result, some consumers may decide to pursue volunteer work with animals or job opportunities in the pet industry (dog walker, groomer, pet store associate, animal trainer, etc. They also realized improved self-esteem, attention, concentration, memory, ability to problem solve, enhanced mastery skills, reduced boredom and anxiety. For more information regarding this program please contact Michele Arthur, Associate Director of Program Services at Sertoma Centre, Inc. at 708-371-9700.
Sertoma Centre, Inc. is a nationally-accredited, not-for-profit agency that provides services to over 650 individuals with developmental, physical and emotional disabilities, and/or mental illness. If you are interested in more information, supporting this program, making a donation, volunteering, or to schedule a tour please contact Melanie Jones, Director of Advancement and Communications at Sertoma Centre, Inc., 4343 West 123rd Street, Alsip, IL 60803.
