Orland Township will present a FREE “Everything You Need to Know” Medicare seminar on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Orland Township Activity Center located at 14807 S. Ravinia Avenue, Orland Park, IL.  Last year’s presentation, hosted by Senior Advocate/Senior Health Insurance Counselor Kathy Kenyeri, went over all the aspects of Medicare, helpful tips and cost saving suggestions.

”We are certainly delighted in giving our Orland Township seniors an informational platform regarding health insurance options,” said Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady.  “We’re very happy that Kathy Kenyeri, our Senior Advocate/Senior Health Insurance Counselor, who is very familiar with Medicare, can offer valuable advice and well-defined direction to those attending the seminar.”

This seminar will cover all aspects of Medicare, including: enrollment periods; Medicare Part A & B benefits, deductibles and benefit periods; Part D prescription drug plans; assignment/non-assignment; home health care/hospice care; skilled nursing facilities; managed care; supplemental/medigap insurance policies; advantage plans; low-income programs; and much, much, more.  Please call Orland Township at 708-403-4222 to register.

It was a good first step, no pun intended…

On October 19th at Georgios Banquets Orland Township will host the sixth annual Dancing with the Senior Stars, a performance competition and fundraiser that features contestants vying before judges and a live audience in the style of “Dancing with the Stars.” But while the popular event showcases the talent of local senior citizens, this year there’s a twist: each senior citizen will be paired on the dance floor with a high school senior.

“Dancing With the Senior Stars benefits a very worthy cause, and it’s a very fun night,” said Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady. “Spotlighting the dancing flair among both of our ‘senior’ communities is something we are all really looking forward to, especially this year because it’s completely brand new.”

That being said, local High School seniors “waltzed” on over to the Arthur Murray Dance Centers in Orland Park on September 5th, for Orland Township’s meet and greet auditions and enjoyed a little “Salsa” dancing with more…seniors.

Carl Sandburg Senior Joe Boyle’s excited about the opportunity.

“I’m really thrilled about doing this,” said Boyle.  “I work with the Orland Township Youth Commission and I just thought it would be great to be a part of this.”

That “beat to the music” is reaching across a number of students and a number of schools.

“My senior counselor emailed us about Dancing with the Senior Stars and it looked like a real fun experience,” said Providence High School Senior Athena Okrie.

“I was looking at what kind of College Scholarships are out there and this competition grabbed my interest,” said Andrew High School Senior Sydney Fugett. “I dance everyday after school and thought why not.”

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and have fun dancing while doing it,” added Katie Kowalski a senior at Providence High School.

The winning student and senior citizen will receive, respectively, a $1,000 college scholarship and a cash prize. Participating students also will earn service hours. Proceeds benefit the Orland Township Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to high school seniors based on academic achievement and community service.

But it’s not just the High School seniors benefitting from all the fancy footwork.

“I think the concept of seniors dancing with seniors in high school is beautiful, “said Orland Park’s Janet Almen. “It’s just a win, win for everyone involved.”

“There was a flyer I saw about this event at one of the dances I was recently at,” added Burr Ridge’s Rick Wagner.  “I remember taking my daughter dancing some time ago when she was a teenager and five years ago we swing danced at her wedding, our first daddy-daughter dance.”

Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Mokena as well as Arthur Murray in Orland Park are sponsoring the event.

“The idea of seniors dancing with seniors from high school bridges generations,” said Arthur Murray owner Julia Mrowiec. “Dancing is really coming back with the younger crowd and it’s a great way to stay active for seniors.”

“Hop” on by for the main event competition October 19, at Georgios Banquets in Orland Park, 4:30p.m. -10p.m. Tickets are on sale now at Orland Township and for more information call (708) 403-4222.
